privacy policy
last updated: april 30, 2026
Muse ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Muse mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your choices regarding your data.
By using Muse, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
1. information we collect
information you provide
- Account information. Phone number used to create your account (verified via SMS one-time code).
- Profile information. Display name, username, bio, location (optional text, not GPS), birth date, avatar photo, style tags, and public/private profile preference.
- Content. Outfit photos, captions, tags, comments, and wardrobe item details (labels, brands, descriptions, links).
- Social interactions. Follows, likes, saves, and community memberships.
- Contacts (optional). If you choose to grant access, we read phone numbers from your device contacts entirely on-device solely to help you find friends already on Muse. We never upload, store, or transmit your contact list to our servers.
- Referrals. When you invite someone by phone number, we store the invited phone number to connect you when they join. Muse also generates shareable invite URLs (e.g.,
museoutfitjournal.com/invite/yourusername) you can send through any channel; when a new user signs up after tapping one, we create a mutual follow between you. - Feedback. Any feedback you submit through the App.
information generated automatically
- Wardrobe analysis. When you log an outfit, we use AI to identify individual clothing items and generate isolated product images. This processing happens on our servers and on our third-party AI provider's servers (see Section 4).
- Push notification token. If you grant notification permission, your device generates an Expo push token which we store on your profile. We are not currently using this token to send any push notifications — the daily outfit reminder is a local notification generated on your device — but we retain it to enable future remote notifications. You can revoke permission at any time by disabling notifications in your device's system settings.
- Usage data. Notification read status, streak counts, and community activity, all stored on your own profile row. We do not use any third-party analytics, telemetry, or tracking SDKs.
information we do not collect
- Precise GPS location (the "location" field on your profile is a free-text label you type yourself, not coordinates)
- The IDFA or any device identifier for advertising
- Browsing history outside the App
- Financial or payment information
- Health, biometric, or fitness data
- Your contact list (we read phone numbers locally on your device only — see above)
cross-app tracking
Muse does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. We do not access the iOS IDFA, the Android Advertising ID (AAID), or any equivalent device-level advertising identifier. You will not see an App Tracking Transparency prompt on iOS because we have nothing to track.
2. how to delete your account or data
We make it easy to delete your account, or just specific pieces of your data, at any time. Muse is operated by Muse (museoutfitjournal@gmail.com).
delete your account from inside the app
- Open Muse and sign in.
- Tap the profile tab.
- Tap the gear / settings icon.
- Scroll down and tap delete account.
- Confirm when prompted. Your account is permanently deleted.
delete your account by email (if you can't sign in)
If you cannot access the app — for example, you no longer have the device or you cannot sign in — email museoutfitjournal@gmail.com with the subject line "Account deletion request" and include the phone number associated with your account (and, if you remember it, your username, e.g. @yourusername) so we can verify the request. We will complete the deletion within 7 business days and reply by email when it is done.
delete specific data without deleting your account
You don't need to delete your account to remove specific pieces of data. Inside the app, you can:
- Delete an outfit — open the outfit, tap the "..." menu, then "delete." This removes the photo, caption, tags, likes, and comments on that outfit.
- Delete a comment — long-press your comment, then tap "delete."
- Delete a wardrobe item — open the item, tap "delete." This also removes any AI-generated product image we created from it.
- Leave a community — open the community, tap "leave."
- Unfollow another user — visit their profile and tap "unfollow."
- Edit profile fields — clear or update your bio, location label, username, birth date, or style tags from Profile → edit profile.
- Disable notifications — Profile → Settings → notification toggles, or your device's system settings.
what is deleted
When you delete your account, the following are removed from active systems immediately and from backups within a reasonable period (typically 30 days):
- Profile (display name, username, bio, birth date, location label, avatar, style tags)
- Phone number
- Outfits — photos, captions, and tags
- Wardrobe items and any AI-generated product images
- Comments, likes, saves
- Follows and community memberships
- Push notification token
- Moderation logs tied to your user ID
what may be retained
- Anonymized records. Limited anonymized data may be kept where required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as resolving disputes or preventing fraud).
- Encrypted backups. Deleted on rotation within a reasonable period after your request (typically 30 days).
- AI provider transient data. Photos and text we sent to our AI service provider for moderation or wardrobe analysis are subject to that provider's retention policy. Per their API terms, those inputs are not used to train their models and are retained only for abuse monitoring for a limited window before automatic deletion.
Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
3. how we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the App
- Create and manage your account
- Display your outfits and wardrobe to you and (if your profile is public) to other users
- Enable social features: following, liking, commenting, communities
- Analyze outfit photos to identify wardrobe items using AI
- Generate product-style images of your clothing items
- Help you find friends via contacts matching
- Display in-app activity notifications (likes, comments, follows, community updates) and deliver the daily outfit reminder if you've enabled it
- Calculate your outfit logging streak
- Respond to feedback and support requests
- Moderate user-generated content to enforce our Terms of Service (see "Content Moderation" below)
content moderation
To keep Muse safe for everyone, every photo you upload and every piece of text you submit (captions, comments, usernames, bios, profile fields) is automatically scanned by our automated moderation system before being saved. This system scores content for categories such as sexual content, hate, harassment, self-harm, and graphic violence. Content that exceeds our thresholds is rejected at upload and never stored or shown to other users.
We also accept user-submitted reports of any outfit, comment, or profile via the in-app report buttons. We review every report within 24 hours and may remove content or suspend accounts that violate our Terms.
You can block any other user from their profile. Blocked users cannot see your content, comment on your outfits, or send you notifications.
4. how we share your information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in these limited circumstances:
service providers
We share data only with the following processors, each of which is contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing their service to us:
- Cloud infrastructure provider (database, authentication, file storage) — stores all account data, outfit photos, wardrobe items, comments, follows, and push tokens on servers in the United States. This provider also handles SMS delivery for phone-based sign-in.
- AI service provider (wardrobe analysis and content moderation) — receives (a) outfit photos for clothing item identification and product image generation, and (b) uploaded photos and user-submitted text for safety moderation. We do not send your name, username, email, or any other profile information to this provider; only the raw photo or text being analyzed.
We do not share data with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics companies, because we do not work with any.
other users
- If your profile is public, your outfit photos, captions, tags, display name, username, avatar, bio, location, and wardrobe (if sharing is enabled) are visible to other users.
- If your profile is private, your outfits are visible only to your approved followers and to members of any community (public or private) you have joined.
- Outfits hidden from the feed (the "only you can see this" toggle) are visible only to you, regardless of profile privacy or community membership.
- Comments and likes you make are visible to other users.
shareable links
Muse generates shareable URLs for profiles (/u/username), outfits (/outfit/id), communities (/c/slug), and invites (/invite/username). Anyone receiving one of these URLs can open a brief preview page on our website that displays the username, community name, or an invite message, and can tap through to open the App. We apply noindex directives so these URLs are not listed by search engines, but we cannot prevent recipients from forwarding them. Content shown to a URL recipient after they open the App is still governed by your privacy settings: private posts remain hidden, and private communities still require admin approval to join.
legal requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law, legal process, or government request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Muse, our users, or the public.
5. data storage and security
- Your data is stored on servers in the United States.
- Photos are stored with access controlled by row-level security policies.
- Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device using platform-native secure storage.
- We use industry-standard security measures, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
6. your rights and choices

You can view and update your profile information, outfits, and wardrobe items at any time within the App.

You can enable or disable notifications globally in your device's system settings (Settings → Muse on iOS, or Settings → Apps → Muse → Notifications on Android), and you can toggle the daily outfit reminder in Profile → Settings inside the app.
reporting and blocking
You can report any outfit, comment, or profile that violates our Terms via the "..." menu on the relevant content. You can block any user from their profile page; blocking is bidirectional and immediate. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
7. children's privacy
Muse is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
8. data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account or specific data, deletion proceeds as described in Section 2 — How to Delete Your Account or Data. Active-system removal is immediate; encrypted backups are rotated out within a reasonable period (typically 30 days). The deletion is irreversible.
9. changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the App. Your continued use of Muse after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
